Every week, thousands of Kiwis fill out their Lotto tickets, dreaming of the moment their numbers are called and life changes overnight. But how do you actually choose your numbers? Should you rely on birthdays, lucky numbers, or pure chance? While every draw is completely random, the way you pick your numbers can influence how much of a prize you might end up sharing.

Birthdays – the most popular (and most common) method

One of the most common ways to pick Lotto numbers is by using meaningful dates: birthdays, anniversaries, or other special occasions. It feels personal, and the numbers are easy to remember. But there’s a catch — dates only go up to 31, and months to 12. That means many players choose numbers in the lower range.

In New Zealand Lotto, where numbers go up to 40, this leaves the higher numbers less frequently chosen. If those higher numbers are drawn, there’s a smaller chance you’ll have to share your winnings with others.

Random numbers – the statistically neutral approach

From a mathematical point of view, every combination has exactly the same chance of being drawn. There are no “lucky” or “unlucky” numbers. That’s why many players let the computer pick for them using a “Dip” or “Power Dip.” This removes patterns and personal biases that people often repeat without realising it.

Studies of lottery behaviour show that randomly generated lines don’t win more often, but they do tend to be more unique. That means if you do win, you’re less likely to split the prize with other players who picked the same numbers.

Patterns and systems – when logic meets luck

Some players try to find patterns in past draws, analysing which numbers “come up often” or which ones “are due.” But in a truly random draw, past results have no influence on future ones. A number that hasn’t appeared for months isn’t “overdue” — it’s just as likely (or unlikely) as any other.

There are also system entries that let you cover multiple combinations at once. These increase your chances of matching some numbers, but they also cost more. For those who enjoy playing with probabilities, systems can be fun — but they don’t change the fact that Lotto is a game of chance.

Avoid the most common combinations

Even though all number combinations have the same odds of winning, some choices can affect how much you take home if you do win. Sequences like 1-2-3-4-5-6 or neat patterns on the ticket are surprisingly popular. If one of those ever came up, the jackpot would be shared among thousands of players.

So it can pay to pick numbers that look a bit random or messy. It won’t increase your odds of winning, but it might increase your share if you do.

Play for fun – not as a strategy

No matter how you choose your numbers, it’s important to remember that Lotto is a game of luck. The odds of hitting the big prize are extremely small, and no method can change that. The best approach is to play for entertainment, not as an investment.

Set a budget you’re comfortable with, enjoy the excitement of the draw, and treat any win as a bonus. After all, the thrill of possibility is part of what makes Lotto fun.

Finding your own approach

There’s no single “right” way to pick Lotto numbers. Some people enjoy using personal dates, others prefer total randomness. The key is to choose a method that feels enjoyable and meaningful to you.

Maybe that’s what keeps Lotto so fascinating — the mix of hope, chance, and imagination. Even though the draw is completely random, it’s only human to look for patterns and to dream that one day, your numbers might just be the lucky ones.
